But of course different CIRs do different jobs — some are more about translating, some do a lot of teaching, etc. etc.

This is a pretty long post! Thank you for reading!! Like usual, if you are using Firefox, you can right click on the pictures and select “View Image” to see larger versions of the pictures~

I made this little map to show our location in relation to other stuff-- I love maps! I left the red line from the other map in this one to show scale. The city is split into 2 sections by the Kinokawa River. The southern part is really old and has been around for a long time--since at least when Toyotomi Hidenaga-- Hideyoshi's brother-- (re)built the Castle in the 16th century on the site of an even earlier castle (thanks Wikipedia). The south side used to be the bumping area with lots of tourism and shopping streets, but now a lot of old businesses have closed because of the bad economy. The new happening spots are all to the north of the river where there's lots of land to build enormous malls and supermarkets and stuff. So there's a lot of talk about the loss of 'mom & pop' shops and the change to 'Big Box' ones just like there is in America (and a corresponding movement to save them). You can also see here the 2 main train stations-- Nankai Wakayama City Station and the JR (Japan Railway) Wakayama Station. Since we are so close to the Nankai one we rarely go over to the JR one though." width="480" />
This is a zoomed out map of Wakayama.
So now the partying has stopped and Izzy doesn’t have time to go visiting cool places around the city. His job includes a little bit of everything– translation, editing English documents written by Japanese people, English teaching, organizing cultural exchange events and anything else his bosses want him to do. He spent a week doing the monthly English newsletter about Wakayama events. He’s going to start teaching English classes for adults soon, one beginner level and one current events/intermediate level. He also does “English Lunch” once a week on Wednesdays when local people can come and chat in English over lunch for free. As far as the CIR (Coordinator for International Relations) position goes, his job is pretty typical.

Thanks for reading! お疲れ様です！(You have become honorably tired.)

In the evening we went out to Ikebukuro to check out Namja Town-- it's a food them park. I didn't get very good pics there so I just explain it. You pay 300yen ($3) to get in and you can go to the different 'kingdoms' which are seasonal and buy food there. First we went to the gyoza stadium where they have gyoza from all over Japan and all kinds of varieties-- some with mochi and cheese or in weird shapes or different meats. We got 3 things-- a sampler set, one kind with a raw egg in the middle for dunking and one with Spanish ham and cheese. They weren't that great actually =/ We were kind of disappointed. The atmosphere was fun though." width="480">
The next day I went out shopping because the orientation panels became more one on one and I didn't want to get found out.
The last section we went to was Ice Cream City. I don’t have a pic so I’ll just leave you with a link: http://www.namja.jp/ice_cream/event/bn/event09.html
This is the highlight of the place. There are several big freezers with cups of ice cream (again) from all over Japan in all the weirdest flavors you can imagine. Some of the tastier-sounding ones were– ramen, pit viper, silk, cow tongue and many more! Of course there were normal ones too. We got 3. First was koshihikari (high grade) rice. It was really boring and tasted like chemicals. Moving on, we tried chicken wing ice cream =o It was awful– but not in the way I expected. I wanted to be hit with a ton of chickeny flavor and be shocked, but the ice cream was really flavorless with little bits of chicken here and there– it was so boring! Last was potato-butter ice cream– this was bad too but a little more edible than the others. It just tasted like if someone took instant mashed potatoes and froze them. Oh well. I would go back again but only in a group because it would be more fun that way and we could try more things. Each gyoza/pudding/ice cream was $3-4 for each one so we didn’t buy that much.

So the next day we all packed up early and went to Haneda airport bound for Kansai!
